The Nikon F changed everything about the way pro photographers work. It was the first hugely successful 35mm single-lens reflex camera.
Prior to its introduction in 1959 photojournalists were primarily using rangefinder cameras like the Leica, Nikon and Contax rangefinders. These were comparatively slow to focus and load.
As you aren’t viewing through the taking lens like with the Nikon F you were only getting an approximation of the image through the finder. Most cameras only showed one focal length and required external finders to show different lenses’ angle of view. Useable focal lengths were limited, macro and telephoto lenses were very difficult to use.
Along comes the Nikon F and a whole generation of SLR’s from many brands followed suit.
Fast loading, bright, through the lens viewing, interchangeable focus screens, multiple finders (including a waist-level) and the ability to accept a motor drive made this great tool.
The F was produced until 1973. It remains a robust and very useable camera. It is fully mechanical and requires batteries only for the light meter in the Photomic head.
It accepts readily available Nikon “F” mount lenses.
