Three 35mm Film Cameras for Beginners

Whether you're revisiting an old hobby or diving into film photography

Nikon FM10

 

The Nikon FM10 is a fully manual 35mm SLR introduced in 1995. Designed

with simplicity in mind, it features a mechanical shutter with speeds

from 1 second to 1/2000 sec, a built-in center-weighted light meter,

and manual focus operation. Because the shutter is mechanical, the

camera remains functional even if the battery dies. The battery only

powers the light meter.

 

One of the FM10's biggest advantages is its compatibility with Nikon

F-mount lenses, giving photographers access to decades of Nikon glass

ranging from affordable manual-focus primes to higher-end optics.

Canon AE-1 Program

 

The Canon AE-1 Program builds on the popularity of the original AE-1

by adding a full Program mode, allowing the camera to automatically

select both shutter speed and aperture. In other words, Program mode

automatically chooses the camera settings for you. As your confidence

grows, you can switch to shutter-priority (semi-manual) or manual

shooting.

 

Released in 1981, it remains one of the most popular film cameras ever

made. It uses Canon FD lenses, which are widely available, typically

affordable, and offer outstanding optical quality across a wide range

of focal lengths.

 

The AE-1 Program strikes an excellent balance between ease of use and

room to grow, making it a favorite among first-time film

photographers.

Canon EOS Rebel 2000

(or Nikon equivalent N75, N80)

 

 

This style of 35mm camera is often overlooked, but If you're looking

for the easiest transition into film photography, the Canon EOS Rebel

2000 is hard to beat. It offers autofocus, fully automatic shooting

modes, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and full Manual

exposure making it easy to capture great photos on your very first

roll while still giving you the flexibility to take more creative

control as your skills grow.

 

Unlike older manual-focus SLRs, the Rebel 2000 feels more like

shooting a modern DSLR. It features evaluative metering, built-in

flash, motorized film advance and rewind, and compatibility with Canon

EF lenses. Many photographers already own EF lenses for digital Canon

cameras, making it an affordable way to get started with film.
